A volcano erupted Sunday on La Palma, one of the Canary Islands of Spain, prompting evacuations of residents and farm animals in the surrounding area, according to multiple outlets, after a week of earthquakes.
No people have been reported injured, the islands’ president, Angel Victor Torres, told a television station, according to Reuters.
The Canary Islands are a popular tourist destination off the West African coast.
A volcano in the Cubre Vieja range on La Palma had not erupted in a half-century, Reuters reported.
Earthquakes had shaken the island in the last week, the Guardian reported.
