The Mitchells vs. The Machines is currently in the midst of a historic week. Today, the animated film achieved its eighth consecutive day atop the Top 10 charts on Netflix, making it just the ninth movie to ever pull that feat off. And if its momentum keeps up this week, then The Mitchells vs. The Machines may break some records.
But was the performance good enough to make the 2021 popularity charts in its opening week? These rankings are updated each day by me as I track where each movie places on the Top 10 charts. I assign points based on performance, and track each film’s score over the course of 2021.
So how are the yearly charts shaping up this week? As of May 8, these have been the 25 most popular movies on Netflix NFLX in 2021 (the bolded selections are newcomers to this list):
- We Can Be Heroes – 355 points
- The Secret Life of Pets 2 – 221 points
- Thunder Force – 187 points
- Yes Day – 176 points

MORE FOR YOU
While only 89 shows have ranked on the Top 10 this year, 137 different movies have managed to make the charts in 2021. So while movies are more likely to thrive on Netflix, it will become tougher and tougher for films to make the Top 25 as the year wears on.
Case in point: there were no newcomers to the Top 25 this week. The Mitchells vs. the Machines came the closest, as the movie has already accrued 80 points. But past that, the second-biggest movie of the week, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, only managed to nab 60 points.
The movies that seemed to be making the biggest impact in recent weeks, Stowaway and The Little Rascals, have both disappeared from the daily charts. After a promising start, Stowaway fell from the charts after just 11 days. And The Little Rascals enjoyed 25 straight days on the Top 10 (a pretty spectacular feat) before falling just short of I Care a Lot in sixth place.
My guess is that you’ll see The Mitchells vs. The Machines rise far up this list very soon. Animated programs have historically performed very well on Netflix—after all, Despicable Me ranks #1 on the all-time Top 10 list, while The Grinch ranks third, The Secret Life of Pets 2 ranks fourth and The Angry Birds Movie 2 ranks sixth. Plus, not much competition will hit Netflix this weekend.
These rankings will continue to be updated weekly, so stay tuned next week to see which movies have moved up and down the list.
