Managerial target doubles down on future following links to Man United

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag reiterates future stance amid claims of Manchester United move

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag has further confirmed his current stance on his future amid claims of a potential move to Manchester United. He has been linked to become the next coach at Old Trafford despite his side bowing out of the Champions League at the hand of Benfica.

Man United are currently searching for the right option to place him into the coaching role at Carrington. Ralf Rangnick is currently at the helm only on an interim basis which means that his side would need someone to guide them from the next season onwards. Ten Hag is in the mix and has been subjected to a lot of talks for quite some time.

Speaking in the pre-match presser ahead of their match against Feyenoord via The European Lad (h/t Fabrizio Romano), Ten Hag has continued to maintain the stance that his mind is fully set on the current campaign. The Dutchman added that he does not think about next season for now as he wants to be focused on the present.

“I am just focused on this season. All energy is being put in the current squad. I don’t think about next season. I want to get the maximum out of the current season”.

No worries

The 52-year-old’s answer is purely a professional one, and his response is similar to how all managers or players react to keep things under control in such situations. As such, we are not worried by his current stance and find it interesting to note that he has not rejected the claims outright.

Ever since Sir Alex Ferguson had left us at the start of the last decade, there has been a lack of stability in the managerial helm. Even if there were some sort of solidity, there were clear signs of a lack of identity that the club is trying to achieve in the future.

The two teams that Ten Hag has built at this current club shows how he sticks to his identity while coping with the changes that the squad underwent. Those who have watched his current team would know that they are heavily reliant on the wings to get the best out of players like Sebastian Haller, who need support from the wide-man.

The Ajax coach’s tactics are still based around total football with slight variations depending on the squad composition. That is proven by how he lined up his team when the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt were still in Amsterdam. The focus was purely on the midfield, which they used to great advantage to cut through opposition.

Having someone like ten Hag, who follows a clear identity while tweaking tactics slightly to suit the squad, would be perfect for us under the current circumstances. That being said, it remains to be seen if the board is on the same page or not and whether they can bring him in to lead us next term.
