Manchester United may not know who their next manager will be but the Red Devils are sounding out transfer targets to replace outgoing striker Edinson Cavani this summer
Manchester United have enquired about signing Lyon striker Moussa Dembele this summer.
Interim boss Ralf Rangnick – ahead of his move into a consultancy role – has advised the club to sign a younger striker in the upcoming transfer window.
Rangnick’s advice comes with Edinson Cavani almost certain to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, with his contract expiring in June and having missied the past six games.
And while 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo ‘s future remains uncertain too, Dembele has been linked a move to Old Trafford.
The Manchester Evening News report that the 25-year-old is one of a number of strikers on United’s shortlist, having previously been touted as a target under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Dembele has only 15 months remaining on his deal at OL, having joined the French giants from Celtic in 2018, where he scored 51 goals in 94 games.
He has failed to replicate the same form he showed in Glasgow at Parc OL and spent the second half of last term on loan at Atletico Madrid. He has returned to bag nine goals during a campaign disrupted by injury.
And with his contract issue and Lyon’s current financial situation – part of the club has been put up for sale – a cut-price deal could be on offer this summer.
United’s interest comes after Rangnick’s telling comments over plans to sign a striker this summer.
“This is obvious,” the acclaimed German coach told a news conference when asked if United could look to add a “younger” marksman to the squad.
“Edinson’s contract is running out in the summer, and the club needs the best possible centre forward. This is an obvious one. I think everyone is aware of that.
The Red Devils are evidently assessing their options for a new No.9, with Anthony Martial out on loan at Sevilla and Marcus Rashford’s situation far from certain.
Stars such as Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski have all been linked, although a player of their calibre coming in would likely depend on the future of Ronaldo.
