NetApp has been pursuing and expanding cloud storage partnerships over the last few years and this month AWS announced the general availability of Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP. The announcement says that this will allow AWS customers to launch and run complete, fully managed ONTAP file systems in the cloud for the first time. This is the same ONTAP used in NetApp’s on-premises network-attached storage (NAS). NetApp and AWS have been collaborating on this offering for two years as indicated below during the company’s analyst briefing.
Amazon FSx is a popular way to manage cloud-native data. Some of the capabilities of AWS FSx are shown below.
Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP is said to provide popular features, performance and APIs of ONTAP file systems as an AWS service. The two companies believe that this will make it easier for customers to migrate on-premises applications that rely on NAS appliances to AWS and provides developers with high-performance and feature-rich file storage that makes it easy to build, test and run cloud-native applications.
FSx for ONTAP storage is accessible from Linux, Windows and macOS compute instances via NFS, SMB and iSCSI protocols. It provides sub-millisecond latencies and high throughput and IOPS. Popular features in ONTAP, such as snapshots, cloning and replication can be performed with the click of a button and supports deduplication and compression to help customers reduce storage costs. Configuration and operation visibility is available from AWS and NetApp management tools and APIs. The image below shows some of the capabilities of FSx for NetApp ONTAP.

Bidirectional automatic data tiering to AWS elastic storage is used to save costs on high performance SSD storage. Backups are incremental and billing is based upon the backup bytes that are stored. Typical all-in costs for a multi-AZ, SSD-based Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP file system is $0.054/GB-mo.
Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP is available in all 21 AWS global regions. Interestingly FSx for NetApp ONTAP is not available in the US West (northern CA) Region, where NetApp is based as well as some regions in Japan and China.
NetApp has broadened its use in the cloud by partnering with AWS to provide FSx for NetApp ONTAP, providing cloud-based tools that make it easy for on-premises NetApp clients to move their workflows to the cloud.
